Data Skills Test
Human Height
The measurement for human height is the distance from the bottom of the feet to the top of the head when a human is standing upright.
Men are generally taller than woman, however women tend to reach their full height sooner than men due to puberty.
It is best to measure height after adolescence- as humans are fully-grown, but before middle age as humans may experience a shrinkage in height due to change in the spinal discs or degenerative disease.
Populations that share similar heredities and environments may also share similar heights. Heights vary from country to country because of differences in genetics and lifestyle, for example, nourishment, sleeping patterns and physical labour.
Exceptional height variation may be due to medical conditions like gigantism or dwarfism. Though factors such as poverty, warfare, and malnutrition during childhood can be said to stunt growth.
Below are charts that represent the heights of European men and women. The charts have been separated into countries with letters beginning with A to L, and those between M and Z, in order to display the data more clearly.
You can see from the charts that the tallest average height for men comes from the Netherlands, and Norway hosts the tallest average woman. Malta is home to the shortest men, whereas the shortest average height for women is in Turkey.
